How I cut nearly 500 calories from my coffee order!

Let’s face it, many of us rely on coffee to make it through the day. A recent study found that well over half of the adults in the US have at least one cup of coffee every single day!  That little pot of liquid gold is my greatest guilty pleasure. Ever since we moved up North, my husband and I have made coffee dates our thing. Our “thing” however, quickly caused me to pack on quite a few pounds. At the time, I didn’t care about calories and lived my life to the fullest. Now that I’m getting older, I realize that wasn’t exactly my smartest decision. As I am currently trying to undo all of the stress I’ve put my body through over the past few years, I realized the importance of counting calories and potion control. My old Starbucks order was 540 calories! That is over 1/3 of the total calories that I currently consume per day!

If you know me, you know I live for peppermint coffee. I tried switching to coffee with regular cream, but it definitely was not my thing. After about a billion failed attempts at finding something new, I decided to take a sip of my husband’s Americano. To my surprise, it actually wasn’t that bad! All it was missing was a little hint of mint. The next time we went back, I decided to get 1 tbsp. of peppermint syrup added to my Americano. At that moment, time stood still, the sky was shining and birds were chirping as trumpets played in the background. Totally kidding, obviously. However, I was beyond excited to finally find something that tasted like my beloved coffee order without sacrificing the majority of my daily macros.

THIS NOTTHAT

I used to order a peppermint white chocolate mocha, coming in at a whopping 540 calories. Now, I order an iced Americano with one pump of peppermint. It’s not nearly as sweet, which I have (thankfully) learned to love. But, it has the same delicious taste that I grew up on. And, *drum roll please* it is only 50 calories! With my total caloric intake at 1,400 per day, this switch was a total game changer for me. It has allowed me to still have coffee dates with my husband, without having to sacrifice my meals throughout the day. BEST. DECISION. EVER.

My husband even joins along every now and then. For example, rather than getting a PSL in the Fall, he orders an Americano with one pump of pumpkin syrup. It’s heavenly. Keep in mind, only getting one pump of the syrup instead of your usual recipe may take some getting used to. However, in the long run it is the greatest way to still be able to have the taste that you love without all of the unnecessary calories, carbs and sugars!
